When Marlowe and Vivian next meet, she tries to tell him that the case is closed. In fact, she becomes quite adamant about it, offering to pay Marlowe off completely and finally.

She also asks him what he does when he's not working; Marlowe plays along with this line. Temporarily.

Their delicious double-entendre is brought to an end when Marlowe inquires who asked her to 'sugar him off' the case, perhaps it was Eddie Mars? Immediately on the defensive, Vivian denies that Mars had any part in this and she leaves abruptly, saying "We could've had a lot of fun if you weren't a detective."
