When Paula asks, the clerk tells her the former innkeeper died several years ago.

Paula rushes from the inn.
Charles approaches the cottage. Savoring every move, he goes through the old squeaky gate and lifts the blossom-laden bough that still needs trimming. He takes out his long-treasured key, fits it to the lock in the front door - it swings open noiselessly.... From at the gate behind him, he hears a woman's voice....
