Random Harvest

Paula chooses a small cottage in West Country Devon. Over the next few months under Paula's care Smithy regains his speech and his confidence. He also begins to write short stories. When a submission is accepted by The Lincoln Mercury newspaper, Smithy proposes marriage to Paula, on the strength of a check for two guineas: "I'ts a lot of nerve, but I'm...I've fallen in love with you."
Paula admits she has run after him from the beginning.
"I've never let you out of my sight since I first saw you in that little shop," she tells him.
"Never do it, Paula. Never let me out of your sight," Smithy answers.

The two are married and begin their new life together.
