In many of the finest films ever made,
Joseph Cotten
played pivotal roles. He appeared in major works in almost every film genre, excelling in them all.

He was good-looking, charming and poised, yet his most valuable film attributes were a low-key manner and a pleasing adaptability.  He was quietly present in an amazing amount of films that have achieved highest honors and/or cult status: Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Gaslight, The Third Man, Shadow of a Doubt, Portrait of Jennie, and The Farmer's Daughter, to name a few. In a career spanning 40 years and 70 films, it's hard to label him as a character actor, leading man, action or romantic hero -- he was the cinematic Average Guy, and an actor with a talent that was anything but average.
