At the turn of the century Fred Harvey's
restaurants sprang up along the route of the new Santa Fe railroad, and
he recruited waitresses who were supposed to epitomize civilization and
good manners to the roughians of the Wild West. Judy's spunky Susan
Bradley "Goes West", all right, and finds a lot more than she bargained
for...but not more than she can handle. The Harvey Girls (1946)
is an all-out rollicking musical and Judy's co-stars included John Hodiak,
"scarecrow" Ray Bolger, Cyd Charisse, and Angela Lansbury as one of the
rival dance-hall girls. The song "On the Atcheson, Topeka, and the Santa
Fe" won that year's Academy Award for Best Song, and of course became a
standard of Judy's repertoire in years to come.
