Lillian Gish in "Broken Blossoms," 1919
Elder sister of silent star Dorothy Gish, Lillian was a top silent star for
seven years
before appearing with Richard Barthelmass in "Broken Blossoms," one of the
most poignant
and greatest of the silent films, its likes never to be seen again.
Her most memorable role in sound films came in 1955 when she played the protecting
mother of the children hounded by homicidal Robert Mitchum in Charles Laughton's
classic thriller, "The Night of the Hunter."
