Watching a Cagney film changes the way you feel. That's the power of Cagney's screen presence - which if you've researched his life - wasn't far from his offscreen personality. I'm a film critic and when current films are dull and unimaginative as they often are, I turn to Cagney. No matter how big the budgets current movies haven't got a thing on Cagney films. There's subtlety and grace to the way Cagney plays it - strong and cool whether good guy or bad; and with the smallest lift of an eyebrow or tilt of a fedora Cagney was captivating. He was and is pure charm. He's a joy to watch.

He had a touch of the gutter! My mother went to Hunter High School with Jeanny, Jim's sister. Mom took my sister out to California to meet them when he was at the top of his career. Mom was sick with TB but didn't know it. Jim noticed her caughing and had his dirver take her to his doctor the next day to analyze the condition. When she got back to NY she went in for the cure. Cagney cared about people.
