In November,1942 I was a young lad of 19, and I was in the Royal Air Force on the Queen Elizabeth on my way to the States for my flying training with the US Navy. On board also was Edward G. Robinson and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and we put on a ship's concert and both of them put on a short skit and I sang. I can now brag that I have performed with both those gentlemen.
It was right after the debacle of the raid by the Canadians on Dieppe and they suffered heavy casualties and many of them were on board returning to Canada. One of the Captains had been badly wounded, was very despondent and jumped overboard. His wife was also with him and I was on detail to guard her cabin. As I stood there in the evening, Edward G. Robinson came along and stopped to chat. Then he went off and came back a short time later with two cups of cocoa and a bag of cookies. We chatted for about half an hour and as my grandmother was a well-known actress in the UK, we had quite a bit in common. (You can Google Minnie Rayner.)
I will always remember your grandfather as a quiet, kind and gracious man who took time out to have cocoa, cookies and chat to a young lad so many years ago.

Thank You for your kind comments,Clementine. And I'm delighted that you're enjoying my grandfather's autobiography. It's lovely to know that his memoirs continue to bring pleasure to so many people.
Best,
Francesca.

Hello, Francesca,

I am currently reading your grandfather's autobiography and I was happy to find this website.

I am enjoying your grandfather's stories and asides very much, and can tell from his frequent references to you how very special you were to him. His comments about you always make me smile.

All my best,

Clementine

Mr. Sugiuchi: I saw the cherub in the film. Are you interested in selling it? If so, what price do you ask?

The wooden cherub I acquired is the one behind Mr. Robinson in his last scene in the movie. In the two previous scenes on this set; it appears that this cherub switched places on the fire-place mantel with the other one. This cherub is smiling while the other one is not.
