Response to Christy: My favorite EGR film? It's a toss up between two that are not among his best known: SEVEN THIEVES (1960) and BLACKMAIL (1939). In the first he is so driven to be successful in a last fling before he dies and so very touching. In BLACKMAIL he's been double-crossed and spends the entire film trying to vindicate himself. He even gets the girl! It has a great sense of justice, somewhat reminiscent of Harrison Ford's THE FUGITIVE. But add DOUBLE INDEMNITY, DR. EHRLICH'S MAGIC BULLET, THE CINCINNATI KID, among many others. I have seen THE BRIGHT SHAWL but I don't have a copy. I do have THE HOLE IN THE WALL and OUTSIDE THE LAW. //// Francesca: Would it be appropriate to share my email address with Christy? I don't want to abuse the site (nor clog it with unwanted verbiage). How are things on the West Coast? I hope you and Adam are doing well. The Beck clan is just fine. And again we're multiplying; Our Jennifer expects #4 in October!

Response:   Hi, Bob. Webmistress Julie here. You're not "clogging" things up - yours and Christy's interchanges are interesting, and certainly EGR-related. However, in case you didn't know, the little @ after your names (at the top of your Guestbook entries) is a link to your respective email addresses, so if you and Christy want to email each other, you can. (And thanks for all your input - keep it up!)

To Christopher Byrne/Christy: I take the liberty of responding to two of your messages. First, I am aware that Edward G. Robinson was disappointed to lose his stage role in MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT to Fredric March, whom he respected but thought wrong for the role (the character was a Jewish businessman whom Robinson played superbly, and as fine an actor as March is/was, he didn't have the Jewish touch the part needed. EGR also had hoped to play another March film role -- Willy Loman in DEATH OF A SALESMAN, a plum for any performer. There are many other instances of roles he might have but didn't play, but those are the two that were major. Another was a biography of Napoleon that never came to fruition in the 1930's. As to the second message, I have been collecting on EGR for fifty years! It all came to a magnificent rewared a few years ago with the publication of my book, THE EDWARD G. ROBINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA,a labor of love. The raw material for the book was thousands of photos and clippings I collected and which even today I pore over and update. (You're absolutely correct to look at eBay; there are always new items there.) I have all but six of EGR's films on tape; EAST IS WEST from 1930 was acquired just last week.
