Barbara,I agree with you about your comments on Dean, what does all the hype mean? To this day he remains a cult hero for what reason, God only knows. He made like 6 films and is considered an acting great, quite ridiculous when you think about it............
God rest his soul but wih the amount of films he has made, he can only be considered a blip on the screen in comparison to all the great classic actors and actresses from the past..........

Hi Karen, I think JG would have been too old to play Cal by then! I like James Dean, but I really don't know what all the hype is about. In all 3 films, he basically played the same role! I don't think he had proven himself enough yet. At times I thought that shy, tortured act was a little too studied! I hope I didn't offend anyone! I think JG was more multi-dimensional and more real!

Nice photo Rocky.
Last night, I watched East of Eden with James Dean. I love this move! It made me a James Dean fan too. This was made 3 years after JG's death. I think JG would have played either the part of Cal or Aaron well. With that said, I feel the part of Cal was made for James Dean. What a performance!
I wonder if James Dean and John Garfield ever met? Maybe not since East of Eden was Dean's first film.

Yes, Karen and everyone, I just went on Turner Classic Movies website and see they are having a tribute to John Steinbeck and "Tortilla Flat" is on. I know I shouldn't complain, I should be thankful that one of his movies is on and believe me, I am. I know at least one of his movies is on but why do they always put his movies on at the wee hours of the morning????Again, I am sorry to complain. I apologize.

Hi, it's been a great JG week for me. First I won and received from E-Bay a great copy of HOW RAYMOND THE WHITE RABBIT AND ROBERT THE BLACK...
78 lps and I could have not asked for a better copy,and today ( thanks to Dennis ) I received the book Body and Soul from Amazon (it's brand new and only paid $10.00. Have a great weekend and Go Yankees !!

Hi all, this is Lu. Sorry I haven't posted lately but things are happening here between household chores and other things that I haven't had time to post. Although I assure you that I look at this website and read the postings every day. It makes me so happy to read the postings and to see the wonderful people who are true John Garfield fans and post every day. I am also enjoying the "quotes" that people are posting and trying to guess what movies they come from. And also the people who are new to this website. IT'S WONDERFUL!!!

How about Patricia Neal in Breaking Point. She was trying to be a wise guy, so she says to Garfield "maybe I should have swam back to shore, or is it swum", so he says either way it still might happen!

Hi Dennis, good idea guessing the lines. 1. Another Sparrow is Fallen Sparrow. 2. If you find anything, I'll share it and I seen your picture in the paper and I couldn't wait to get you alone ( I love that one) They Made Me A Criminal 3. Any day is good if you don't get killed is from Force of Evil. I think the last one maybe from Nobody lives Forever or he may have said if you come up with a rattle, I'll make you eat it.
What movie, did JG say, 'give these steaks to the dogs?" He also said, the bathroom is cute!
In another movie he said, there are all kinds of animals, and not all of them are from NY!
They have been working overtime for nearly half a century, I changed my name to throw them off the track, but it didn't work.

Barbara... I know exactly what you mean about watching JG's later movies. I really like He Ran All the Way, but it is heartbreaking for me to watch. He did give an excellent performance as Nick!!
You know, I think what stands out most for me about JG (besides his great looks) is the one-liners he has delivered throughout his movie career.... They are so memorable!
What are your favorites????

Hello John...I have to respectfully disagree...if you ever get the chance read Larry Swindells book from 1974 Body and Soul. He devotes a good portion of the book to Cagney and Garfield only seeing each other on the studio lot at various functions. Cagney according to Swindell did nto care for Garfields politial leanings, and maybe more importantly Garfield as an actor. He was an upstart, from NYC, stage actor. They were suppose to make a movie together which Garfield wanted to do badly for he loved Cagney. For whatever reason, Garfield was replaced. Garfield was disappointed. this is according to John Garfield biographer Larry Swindell.

Dennis keep in mind James Cagney was a very private person. In real life he was humble and shy, the exact opposite of many of his screen personas. Cagney was married to the same woman for 60+ years....
I don't think it was by design that Cagney and Garfield never did a movie together. Cagney and EG Robinson only did one film together and it was nothing to shout about....
I think Warner Bros. knew what they were doing with their stars and didn't see the value of placing them together in many films.........

Great picture of James Cagney and John Garfield...seems like both stars are greeting some people arriving on a airplane. I have never see a photo of Cagney and Garfield together. As I have said in the past according to Larry Swindell in his book, Cagney and Garfield never made a pic together. And it seemed like Cagney for whatever reason didnt take a shine to Garfield. This is according to the Swindell book. They would see each other at studio functions but never warmed up to one another. Too bad, they would have made a great team together.

John, it was a mediocre film, but Garfield is always interesting to watch though JG did seem to be a little world weary and tired in it, but this was the time he was being stressed with all that HUAC activity. I find his latter pictures somewhat sad to watch because you know what is in store for him in the future.
