Hi, this is Lu again. I just wanted to take a moment to thank Dennis for alerting me to the fact that East Of The River was on last week.

Because John Garfield's movies haven't been on too much on TCM, I haven't much bothered to look on the TCM website lately because I have been busy with other things.

So, I took the opportunity to tape it again on another VCR because as I mentioned in a previous posting, I haven't had a chance to figure out how to get the VCR to work on the other one so I decided to buy a couple of DVDs until I can get the one downstairs fixed.

Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone! Sorry to hear about your troubles, Lu! Thanks for the info about Perc Westmore. I didn't realize he was married to Rosemary Lane. Remember her with JG in Blackwell's Island? Garfield was so young and cocky in that. Sometimes in my own head I feel like there was 3 different Garfield's, pre Fallen Sparrow, then the middle years with Postman and Pride of the Marines, and then the last phase when he was more cynical and world weary such as in Force of Evil and Breaking Point!.....Hi Denis, how is everything, I was just going to check out your website! Are you still doing your show?

Hi, this is Lu. I wasn't going to write anything today because things have been VERY hectic here. I walked into my garage the other day and noticed a leak dripping on the ground from our heating system and when the man came to fix it, he noticed also that my holding tank for water was leaking so I was bailing out water every hour and a half, plus clearing my garage somewhat so he could work and then installing a new holding tank. But when I saw that there were postings again, I decided I had to write something.

Yes, I agree it is WONDERFUL to see new postings again although I haven't posted anything for a while myself.

I also read that Perc Westmore was also married to Rosemary Lane (Priscila & Lola's sister) and that Gloria Dickson was an alcholic (looking at her in They Made Me A Criminal), it's hard to believe and yes, I read also that she was killed when her house caught fire.

Thanks, John! I really liked Breaking Point. I thought Garfield was great in it, as was the rest of the cast. The story was much closer to the Hemingway book. I just watched To Have and Have Not last week once again for the 100th time, very entertaining, but not much resemblence to the original story. I love the dialoug, especially when Dolores Moran faints and Bogart is carrying her, and Bacall says "trying to guess her weight Steve!.....Maybe when Robert Osbourne returns to TCM, he'll start showing better selections!

The Breaking Point was an okay film but I don't think it was as good as To Have And Have Not.

I am seeing less and less of the 30s and 40s films on TCM. They really don't seem to know their audience well.

Happy Thanksgiving Barbara and Karen. I hope all is well. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

This board sure has been inactive. Hope evverybody is well.........

Hi Gary, I've seen that out take of They Made Me A Criminal on the John Garfield documentary. I'm not sure why they replaced Beliuh Bondi, possibly for health reasons? Speaking of that film, I recently read that Gloria Dickson the girl who played Peggy died in a tragic fire at 28. She had been married to the make-up artist Perc Westmore......I never thought Breaking Point got it's proper acclaim. JG was absolutely great in it! ....Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Regarding Hemingway, I believe he felt that THE BREAKING POINT was the best film adaptation of one of his books up to that time. / I have a DVD of classic movie bloopers & outtakes, and one of them is from THEY MADE ME A CRIMINAL. In the scene, JG is slapped by the character of Grandma Rafferty. What's interesting is that Beulah Bondi is playing Grandma R. in the scene, rather than May Robson, who ended up in the role. Has anyone ever heard why the casting change was made?

Hi Dennis, I was thinking the same thing, where is everyone. My computer was in the shop, but I happened to stumble upon East of the River. I recorded it and watched it last night....I purchased Under My Skin a few years ago, as I hadn't seen it for 40 years. It is part of the Hemingway Collection

Interesting that Alec Baldwin is a fan of JG. Back in the '90s he appeared in stage and TV revivals of "A Streetcar Named Desire" playing Stanley Kowalski, the role JG is "famous" for turning down.

A reference to J.G. was made on the premiere of the new season of "Saturday Night Live." Host Alec Baldwin (impersonating Tony Bennett) cited John Garfield as his favorite actor. Probably means someone on the show (maybe Baldwin) is a fan.

Absolutely one of my favorites along with Dana Andrews- both not getting the recognition they deserve.

Hope this isn't old news, but has anyone else seen a 1986 TV-movie titled "Ordinary Heroes"? Also released on video, it stars Richard Dean Anderson & Valerie Bertinelli and is basically an uncredited remake of "Pride of the Marines". Uncredited because no acknowledgement is made re its being based on the screenplay of the Garfield movie. The main differences are that the characters' names are changed, it takes place during the Vietnam War, and there's no scene where the hospitalized vets discuss what the future holds for them. Also, of course, it pales in comparison to the original film.

I just read Cliff Robertson died, whom I meet at a charity function 10 years ago. What a thoughtful man he was. He came out over to our table to express his condolences to my Uncle Jake ( from the Raging Bull) on the loss of his son who had died in the Swiss Air plane crash! He sat down, and was just the nicest man. I would have loved to have quizzed him about his various movie roles, but I didn't want to impose myself on him! Ironically, I just watched Picnic the other night. I think it was one of his first films! RIP

Hi Dennis, I absolutely agree with you! Garfield would have been great in the part, there isn't anything he ever wasn't good in! Supposedly he would only commit to a 4 month run, and he wanted the rights to play in the movie, which they couldn't come to terms with!....I don't think Elia Kazan was a very nice person. In "On The Waterfront" when Terry Malloy yells down to Lee J. Cobb "I'm glad I did what I did to you, and I not sorry I ratted you out", I guess Kazan was looking for some sort of personal redeemption and trying to justify what he did! Garfield absolutely had a street mentality about ratting others out, which I so respect him for!

Dennis | @
Abe Polonsky called Kazan a traitor...he mentioned names to save his own skin...as did Larry Parks...lot of pressure on those people who were worried about their careers....but our hero had his street boy image...and he kept it till the day he died...you dont rat on no one...I love the guy for that...I think Garfield would have been fantastic as Stanley...he had grown into such a great actor...he was a stage actor fisrt and Streetcar was like a play on screen...he would have been wonderful...trust me!!

Hi Karen, I'm sorry to hear about your problems from all that rain! Our pool would have overflowed, but my husband kept going out to let water out!

Getting back to Kazan, I remember the year he was getting the special Oscar. Nick Nolte and Ed Harris were both up for acting awards and they sat on their hands instead of clapping for Kazan. I honestly don't know what I would have done. I respect Kazan as a director, but as a person he was lacking in a lot of ways, especially because he later said he didn't think Garfield had the depth to play Stanley! Perhaps he would have gave it a different spin than Brando! I guess Kazan being rejected in Hollywood is like a baseball player getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame, on his merits, but being denied admission on their indiscretions. What do you guys think?
