The man could have been my dad. My late mom had 31 marriage proposals, in December of 1941. She was single and living in Oakland, when the Japs stabbed us in the back. In the summer of 1934, she and her parents were driving through Los Angeles. They had a beaten up old Cunningham towncar, that stalled in one of the big intersections of the town. A second or two later, a brand new Packard slammed into the back of their car. Its' driver, furious, came stomping up, fists doubled, ready to deliver a solid dressing down to whomever had caused this mishap. He saw my scared little mom, twenty-six years old, frightened out of her wits, but ready to face whatever was coming her way. Well, The Prisoner of Zenda took one look into her misty blue eyes and CAVED. THIS was the person who'd messed up his fancy new ride? Well.uh.oke, no problem. I mean, really, how was I to know that you'd be using this intersection? PLEASE forgive me! And, by the way, have you ever considered acting? I could easily arrange a screen test." As a matter of fact, she HAD been approached for stage work, in her native Boston, but had balked, when she found that she'd be required to use improper grammar. Oh, well. She must have known what she wanted. But, if she'd taken another tack, I could have been signing off tonight as Norm Coleman, instead of Watson. Would this havew been a far, far better thing? Who knows? Norm

Ronald Colman (Feb.9, 1891-May 19, 1958) 51st Anniversary of his death. 51 years and yet, time has not stilled that wonderful voice nor has it tarnished the magic of that most gifted of "amateur" actors (as he liked to say of himself). By all counts, a fine man, devoted husband and father and, in a very special way, a profound inspiration to me. If there's a Heaven, and I believe there is, then I also believe that you most assuredly are there. God bless you and may your spirit and the memory of you live on and on and on! (and may Turner Classic Movies show more of your films!!!!!)

I think Ronald Colman is so typical of the great stars of the past, in that they were so identifiable by their voices alone. Today's stars in addition to their cookie cutter looks, totally lack that uniqueness.

Ronald Colman has the most beautiful voice ever created. He was born shortly before my father and it is true that an era died with him. An era that was much gentler and nicer than what we have today. When my father and his brother died the nurse told me that Mr. Wheelock went to heaven and further told me that they were true gentlemen in the true sense of the word as was Ronald Colman. Thank goodness we have the fruits of his work to watch today, thanks to the many people who restore films.
