My grandmother went to Venice High School with Myrna Loy. She stayed in touch with her through the years and was invited on the set of the original Thin Man movie at MGM in Culver City. Quite a thrill for her when she was introduced to Mr. Powell.

My father and grandfather both knew William Powell and thought very highly of him. The stories they would tell of MGM and in particular L.B. Mayer were really something. A heck of a guy.

For me, William Powell will always be a delightful visual archetype of the sophisticated man of the world whose cynical wit defends a gentle soul. It's a wonderful frisson that the real man was so close to the image.
