Arch of Triumph (1948)
Charles Boyer is an exile, a doctor practicing illegally in Paris before WWII, under constant threat of deportation. His main purpose in life is his hunt for the Nazi officer (Charles Laughton) who murdered his wife, but then he falls for Ingrid Bergman after rescuing her from a suicide attempt. Dark melodrama doesn't always work, but fine performances from the principals make it worthwhile.
